The La Plata Mountains, seen from San Juan County, are a small subrange of the San Juan Mountains in sw Colorado, and includes Hesperus Mountain at 13,332 feet.
Shiprock (Tsé Bitʼaʼí, "rock with wings") is a 27 million year old volcanic rock formation, designated as a National Natural Landmark, rising 1,583 feet above the desert.
The eggs and hoodoos in the Bisti Wilderness were formed in sand and silt revealed 73 million years ago when the Western Interior Seaway receded.
Navajo Lake is a 3800 feet long and 400 feet deep reservoir located in northeastern San Juan County, created from a dam completed in 1962.
Angel Peak Scenic Area is located 15 miles south of Bloomfield in San Juan County, with over 10,000 acres of rugged terrain, badlands and deep canyons.
Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness (Bisti Badlands) is a 45,000-acre wilderness area full of rock formations made of sandstone, shale, mudstone, and silt.
The San Juan River is a 383 mile long major tributary of the Colorado River and a primary drainage for the Four Corners.
The Aztec Ruins National Monument, on 318 acres, consists of dwellings and sacred structures built by Ancient Pueblo Indians in the 12th and 13th Centuries.

Suicide Rates

Suicide is a difficult public health issue that impacts families and communities. In San Juan County, Suicide was the 8th leading cause of death in 2020. Across the U.S., it is the 12th leading cause. 

In 2020, in San Juan County there were 48 suicide deaths, up from 33 in 2019, giving a rate of 41.8 deaths per 100,000 population, which is over 2.5 times the U.S. rate of 14.8.

Suicide Trends

As can be seen from the graph, suicide rates have increased over the past 20 years, across the county, as well as across New Mexico and the U.S. San Juan County's rate is significantly above that in New Mexico and the U.S., and over the past 7 years the rate has increased at a more rapid rate in the county.

Suicide Rate by Sex

Men have a suicide rate that is over 3.5 times higher than women. Of the 193 suicide deaths in the past 5 years (from 2016-2020), 80% were males (154 were males, 39 were females). The overall increase in the suicide rate is reflected in the increase of suicide deaths among males.

Trends: Suicide by Race-Ethnicity

Across the U.S., the suicide rate for Native Americans is higher than for other races/ethnicities. In San Juan County, from 2008 through 2018, the rate among Whites was higher, but in the most recent time frame, this trend changed to mirror that of the U.S., with Native Americans having a higher suicide rate than Whites. In 2020, the suicide rate among Native Americans was 46.4 deaths per 100,000; the rate among Whites was 35.2.

There is an interaction of age and Race/Ethnicity: the average age at the time of suicide death among both Native Americans and Hispanics is in the 30's, whereas the average age of suicide death among Whites is in the 50's.

Another way of saying this is that, among older adults, the suicide rate is higher among Whites, whereas among younger adults, the rate is higher among Native Americans and Hispanics.

Suicide Rate by Age Group

Since 2012, the rate of suicide among 25-34 year olds has been above the rates among other age groups. Also, the suicide rate among the two age groups, 25 to 34 and 35 to 44, has increased more rapidly over the past 10 years.
